Most of the construction you hear about or are thinking about, in-fact most of the types of home remodeling or upgrading projects that you can think about are all affected by the changing seasons. Typically in the winter many types of home construction and upgrade projects are halted entirely.

Many roofing products aren’t typically installed in the winter because the shingles are more brittle and snow can make the installation of a roof more difficult and honestly the cold, snow, and wind can make for a miserable experience. As we shift our companies focus to build more pole barns we feel like it is necessary to outline what can and can’t be done when you’re considering having a pole barn built in the winter.

The biggest potential problem you may run into when building any type of new construction building in the winter is that the ground is frozen. All buildings in NY if they’re a permanent structure, require a footer or some type of foundation that is below the frost line. This ensures that the freezing ground will not cause the foundation to shift.

Having a frozen ground can make it much more difficult to be able to dig below the freeze and into the soft soil. Codes requires we dig to at least 42″ when we’re building our foundations. However since we utilize powerful hydraulic augers, digging through the frozen ground is no problem.
